Disappointed with Jokowi, PDI-P is considered to continue to warn cadres not to lie

PDI-P is considered very disappointed in Jokowi and his family. It is thought that the estranged relationship between the two will last a long time.

JAKARTA, KOMPAS – The relationship between the General Chair of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle Megawati Soekarnoputri and President Joko Widodo is considered to be increasingly strained after the 2024 Election. PDI-P feels very disappointed with the political steps Jokowi and family who do not support the party that has raised and made its name proud.

Hence, Megawati's statement reminding her party members not to lie, especially those who are running as potential regional leaders, is a profound message to prevent similar cases from recurring in the future.

A political observer from Al-Azhar Indonesia University, Ujang Komarudin, when contacted on Saturday (4/27/2024) in Jakarta, assessed that the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) is currently very disappointed and even angry with Jokowi and his family. This is because Jokowi is seen as not obedient to the PDI-P's instruction to win the presidential candidate pair they support, namely Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD. Jokowi is instead accused of abandoning PDI-P altogether.

"To face the upcoming regional elections, PDI-P will continue to criticize Jokowi, such as the statement that party members must be honest, not lie, and keep their words in line with their actions. It is clear that the statement is directed towards Jokowi and his family," said Ujang.

The coordination meeting of PDI-P with regional heads and deputy heads from PDI-P, which was held behind closed doors at the Party School Building in Lenteng Agung, Jakarta on Friday (04/26/2024). The meeting was directly led by the General Chairperson of PDI-P, Megawati Soekarnoputri.

In the 2024 presidential election, Jokowi is proven to support the presidential and vice presidential candidate pair Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who is Jokowi's eldest child. Jokowi's political stance will fracture his relationship with PDI-P, and the rift is expected to last for a long time.

It is known that Jokowi began his political career in the PDI-P party during the Surakarta Mayor Election in 2005 and 2010, then became the Governor of DKI Jakarta, until being elected as president for two terms from 2014-2019 and 2019-2024. Gibran also began his political career by running for the Surakarta Mayor Election in 2020 from the PDI-P party and was elected. Bobby Nasution, Jokowi's son-in-law, also experienced similar success by running in the Medan Mayor Election 2020 and now becoming the Mayor of Medan in North Sumatra.

Take lessons

According to Ujang, PDI-P has learned from the case of Jokowi and his family. PDI-P was deeply disappointed in Jokowi, therefore instructions to members and leaders must be honest and truthful, repeatedly conveyed. This is also interpreted as a way for PDI-P to prevent similar incidents from happening again.

"The PDI-P does not want to be disadvantaged again. Perhaps the PDI-P also does not want to be used only as a tool by future regional head candidates supported by the PDI-P, but on the contrary, and do not let it harm the PDI-P," said Ujang.

Previously, the General Chairperson of the PDI-P Megawati Soekarnoputri reminded party cadre, especially those who will run in the regional elections, to not lie. Honesty is one of the attitude and actions qualifications that must be strengthened, in addition to discipline and working hard in solving people's problems. According to Megawati, honesty is highly necessary in an organizational context.

He gave an example, if a political party instructs a certain work program, then a cadre lies by claiming to have carried it out, but in reality it is only done half-heartedly.

As a leader, I can be wrong in terms, but I can't lie, especially since I will soon be appointed Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia.

"Do not lie. For me, if we are committed to die hard, yes, we really have to die hard. If you're lying, it's better not to. Instead of becoming an official, but then lying, it is better that one region is empty (of cadres who sit as regional heads). So, don't be rude," said Megawati when giving directions at a coordination meeting held at the Party School Building, Jakarta, Friday (26/4/2024).

The Head of the Honor Division of the Central Executive Board (DPP) of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Komarudin Watubun, also addressed the issue of Gibran's lies against the PDI-P. Before deciding to run for the 2024 Presidential Election, Gibran had affirmed his loyalty to the PDI-P. Even at the PDI-P National Working Meeting attended by PDI-P Chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri in June 2023, Gibran claimed he would remain in the PDI-P despite interest from other parties.

"The issue of air pollution is not new. The threat to the community from air pollution has been present for a long time. Research has shown evidence of the dangers posed by air pollution. However, this has not yet resulted in significant efforts to control it. The residents have been suffering more and more under the siege of air pollution. "Mr. Gibran himself stepped up to the pulpit and at the time stated that he would remain with the PDI Perjuangan. Therefore, if he were to later run for vice president, and now the Secretary-General of the PDI-P (Hasto Kristiyanto) clarifies the matter and is considered dangerous, it is actually Mr. Gibran who is dangerous. As a leader, I may make mistakes, but I cannot lie, especially as he will soon be inaugurated as Vice President of the RI," he said (Kompas.id, 24/4/2024).
