M 6.5 earthquake in Garut felt as far away as Jakarta

The M 6.5 earthquake off the coast of southern West Java did not have the potential for a tsunami.

BANDUNG, KOMPAS — Earthquake tectonics off the coast of southern West Java, Saturday (27/12/2023) evening, no potential tsunami. However, this earthquake measuring 6.5 magnitude was felt as far away as Jakarta and as far away as Bogor, Tangerang, Tasikmalaya and Pangandaran.

Based on data from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake point was located at coordinates 8.42 degrees South Latitude and 107.26 degrees East Longitude. This location is 151 kilometers off the southwest coast of Garut Regency, West Java.

As a result of this incident, several damages were reported in Tasikmalaya. One of them occurred at the Kwarcab Pramuka Tasikmalaya building. The roof of the building's hall collapsed.

A number of houses in Cilawu, Garut Regency, were also reported damaged.
