Garut Earthquake M 6.5, Damage in 10 West Java Regions

The impact of damage caused by the earthquake that occurred in Garut Regency reached 10 areas in West Java.

BANDUNG, KOMPAS - An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.5 occurred offshore at a distance of 156 kilometers southwest of Garut Regency, West Java, on Saturday night (4/27/2024). Based on preliminary data collection by the West Java Regional Disaster Management Agency, the impact of the earthquake resulted in damages in 10 districts and cities.

Public Relations Officer of the West Java Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Hadi Rahmat Hardjasasmita, on Sunday (28/4/2024) revealed that damage includes homes and public facilities. This finding is based on interim data collection by the local BPBD.

These areas are Tasikmalaya, Garut, Sukabumi and Ciamis Regencies.

Damage has also been observed in the districts of Bandung, West Bandung, Pangandaran, and Purwakarta. In addition, it has occurred in Tasikmalaya and Cimahi cities.

For example, in Garut regency, 24 houses were reported damaged, in Ciamis regency (12), Tasikmalaya regency (6), Tasikmalaya city (5) and West Bandung regency (2).

Meanwhile, in Bandung Regency, Purwakarta Regency, and Pangandaran Regency, it was reported that one house was damaged in each area. In Cimahi City, the ceiling of the third floor of SMP Negeri 11 collapsed.

Regarding the damage to public facilities, there are a total of 4 units in Tasikmalaya Regency and 3 in Garut. The public facilities affected include healthcare facilities, places of worship, and even the Police Station headquarters.

"The healthcare facilities affected were the ceiling of the SMC Hospital in Tasikmalaya Regency and the building of the Pameungpeuk General Hospital in Garut Regency," said Hadi.

He stated that there were three affected residents in Garut Regency and one in Tasikmalaya Regency. The West Java BPBD is still coordinating with the BPBD officials in 10 regions to collect data on the number of victims and affected buildings.

Hadi Rahmat Hardjasasmita, the Young Expert Public Relation Officer of the West Java Provincial Disaster Management Agency, presented the location of the whirlwind disaster in Bandung, West Java during November, on Wednesday (15/11/2023).

"The data on the impacts of the earthquake is still dynamic. We are continually collecting data on the number of buildings and victims in these 10 areas," he added.

The Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center at BMKG, Daryono, explained that the earthquake analysis was located at coordinates of 8.39 degrees South Latitude and 107.11 degrees East Longitude. The earthquake occurred at 23:29 WIB.

He explained that this earthquake is a medium-sized earthquake. This is caused by the deformation activity of rocks in the Indo-Australian plate that is subducted beneath the Eurasian plate in southern West Java.

"The earthquake occurred at a depth of 70 kilometers. This earthquake does not have the potential to trigger a tsunami and is considered a moderate earthquake," said Daryono.
