This year’s Christmas celebrations throughout the country took place peacefully, securely and solemnly. We are grateful and thankful for such a situation, which did not happen by itself.
Efforts were made by the state and community organizations to give a sense of security for citizens to perform their religious rituals.
In Jakarta, National Police chief Gen. (Pol) Tito Karnavian, Indonesian Military (TNI) Air Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto, Home Minister Tjahjo Kumolo, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan and Jakarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno visited a number of severalhey were present to ensure the celebration of Christmas took place peacefully.
National Police and TNI personnel were deployed to help maintain the situation. Outside Jakarta, a similar situation was found, thanks to the government officials who were able to ensure security and peace. The participation of high-ranking officials, and the presence of the Jakarta governor and governors in other regions can be seen as a symbol of unity among officials to continue weaving the nation, which has been torn apart by the gubernatorial election in Jakarta.
Thanks also to the National Police and Transportation Ministry, which have strived to ensure that transportation systems operated properly during Christmas. Indeed, there were traffic jams, but they were a normal part of a long holiday and were settled quickly. The influx of travelers during the New Year holiday still needs to become a national priority.
As a celebration, Christmas has passed. However, the joint Christmas message made by the Bishops Council of Indonesia (KWI) and Indonesian Communion of Churches (PGI) needs to be underlined; it is timeless and must be fought for. The message included insights on how to present Indonesia (which is increasingly just and sovereign), maintain Indonesia (which is plural), fight against corruption and preserve the environment. It added that too much love for wealth was a source of crime.
The social and economic gaps are problems that we must jointly settle. An attitude of solidarity and empathy toward fellow human beings, and prioritizing an attitude of sharing must be part of our efforts to rise and grow together.
The need to enrich oneself by exploiting nature and the environment is unwise, particularly if those steps were taken by way of corruption. The attitude of continuing to hunt for treasure and power can become a source of social disaster.
Christmas has passed. However, the spirit of harmony and plurality must be continuously maintained. Christmas as a form of rebirth into a new condition must be continuously fought for; a new condition that must be fought for with the community, which is just and increasingly civilized, and the objective of respecting our differences in the framework of the Pancasila.
