State Gives Guarantee on Security
Security was tightened following the riot at the Mobile Brigade headquarters (Mako Brimob). The government has guaranteed security to all people and international events held in the country.
JAKARTA, KOMPAS — The chaos at the Mobile Brigade headquarters (Mako Brimob) in Kelapa Dua, Depok, West Java, was the subject of government evaluation. The government guarantees security to everyone. Security guarantees are also given to all national and international events to be held in the country.
To prevent similar incidents from happening again, police on Tuesday to Thursday increased security and alertness against the potential of attacks from sympathizers and members of terrorist networks.
Indonesian Ulema Council chairman KH Ma\'ruf Amin asked the community to let the National Police handle the incident at Mako Brimob. "Do not be provoked by unfounded and offensive news. Our law enforcement institutions and deradicalization efforts are already good," he said in Cilegon, Banten, Friday (11/5/2018).
Security
Security has been tightened in Mako Brimob. Yesterday morning, dozens of Brimob personnel were equipped with bulletproof vests and long-barreled guns around the Mako Brimob entrance gate.
The effort to tighten up the security was also carried out because after the incident in Mako Brimob, there were two attacks on National Police personnel by sympathizers of the terrorist groups.
First, the attack was against chief Brig. Marhun Frenje at Mako Brimob by TS, 22. Initially, on Thursday at around 11:29 p.m., Marhum saw TS observing the conditions at the entrance of Mako Brimob for two hours. Marhum then asked for the help of First Brig. Rahmat Muin and First Brig. Gustru Uce to inspect TS.
When he was taken to one of the examination rooms at Mako Brimob, TS, who was hiding a sharp weapon in his pants, stabbed Marhum from behind. TS also tried to attack Gustri, but Gustri avoided and fired a shot at TS, which led to his death. After being treated, on Friday morning, Marhum also died.
National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian suspected the knife used by TS contained poison. As a result, Marhum died. "The wound is so small that it is likely that the knife is poisonous," Tito said.
The death of Marhum adds to the long list of police officers who died in terrorist acts. Previously, in the incident at the Mako Brimob Detention Center, five police officers were killed.
Data of Densus 88 counterterrorism squad shows that from 2004 to May 2018 as many as 47 police officers were killed in terrorism incidents. More than that, 98 other police officers were injured when dealing with terrorists.
The second incident occurred when a member of the Densus 88 counterterrorism squad arrested four suspected terrorists on Jalan Stasiun Tambun, Tambun, Bekasi regency, West Java, last Thursday, at around 1:35 p.m. The four are RA, 41; JG, 30; AM, 38; and HG, 40.
In the arrest operation, according to National Police public relations head Insp. Gen. Setyo Wasisto, RA and JG resisted arrest by trying to strangle and seize the police’s firearms. As a result of that action, the police shot the two of them.
After being treated for two hours at Bhayangkara Hospital, East Jakarta, RA died.
From the four suspected terrorists, the Densus 88 counterterrorism squad seized, among others, 25 pieces of .9-millimeter caliber bullets, 25 shooting nails, and 69 pieces of shell bullets. "They were part of a network of Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD) of West Java who were planning to go to Mako Brimob. They were believed to take action during the riot incident at Mako Brimob," said Setyo.
Guarantee
Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko affirmed the government was paying attention to the families of victims of the terror attacks in Mako Brimob. He also asserted that the state would not tolerate terrorism and would be assertive.
Therefore, Moeldoko said, there was no need for the international community to be concerned about the security situation in Indonesia. Serious attention will be given by the government to international events to be held in Indonesia. The agenda includes, for example, the 18th Asian Games in August in Jakarta and Palembang as well as the annual meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund in Bali in October.
Serious attention will also be made during the elections in 171 local elections in June. After meeting Moeldoko at the Presidential Palace complex, former coordinating maritime affairs ministers Rizal Ramli said the heat of national politics had not damaged personal relationships. Thus, there is nothing to worry about in national politics.
Strict security
A total of 145 detainees were moved from the detention center to prisons in Nusakambangan, Cilacap, Central Java, namely Batu and Pasir Putih penitentiaries. Batu prison is able to accommodate 96 prisoners, while Lapas Batu can accommodate 124 inmates.
In the two prisons, inmates are placed in special cells with strict conditions such as restrictions on visits and restrictions on receiving food and any items from outside.
The Law and Human Rights Ministry’s correctional affairs director general, Sri Puguh Budi Utami, said terrorism inmates must be handled differently and not mix with other prisoners.
Even though they are given visitation rights, terrorism inmates are not permitted to have direct contact with family members.
Head of the Public Relation division of the Director General of Correctional Affairs Ade Kusmanto said that in order to deal with the terrorist prisoners, his office will cooperate with the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT). The BNPT will be in charge of taking control in prevention and guidance during their stay in prisons and accompaniment after being freed from prison.
Terrorism observer Al Chaidar said the mismanagement in the handling of terrorism inmates in detention centers or prisons can have a heavy impact as terrorism inmates are generally ready to die and will do anything to show that they stand by their beliefs.
