PASURUAN, KOMPAS — The bomb explosion that occurred on Thursday (5/7/2018) at a rented house in Bangil district, Pasuruan regency, East Java, is tied to an old terrorist network. The bomb maker is known to be the same person who bombed a police station in Kalimalang, East Jakarta, in 2010. He was planning a new attack.
The police are collecting information on the network and the new terror plan. “We are investigating,” East Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Machfud Arifin told a press conference on Thursday at the police station.
The explosion occurred at 11:30 a.m on Thursday at a rented house in Pogar subdistrict, Bangil district, Pasuruan. Abdullah, 50, had rented the house and live there with his wife Dina, 40, and Umar (2 years, 4 months), who was injured in the explosion. Another child was at school during the explosion.
“The bomb was made of low explosives so the plates and other items in the house were not impacted. Only, the glass windows and the ceiling of the house were damaged. The toddler was apparently playing with the bomb as a toy,” said Machfud.
He said there were four explosions in Bangil. Two of the explosions were unintentional and occurred in a room, one explosive was thrown to disperse the crowd of residents that had gathered, and one was thrown at a police officer.
Sent to prison
Abdullah was convicted for the 2010 bombing of a police station in Kalimalang, East Jakarta, and was released three years ago from Jakarta’s Cipinang Prison after serving five years.
“After serving his jail term, he went to East Java and married a woman and settled in Bangil. He has lived in Bangil for 1.5 years. They have lived at the rented house in Pogar subdistrict for six months,” said Machfud.
Neighbors said Abdullah had no steady job, while wife sold clothing online. From the, The police raided the residence and found three illegal ID cards bearing Abdullah’s name. The first ID is registered in Aceh, the second ID card bears the name Anwardi and is registered in Banten, and the third bears the name Ahmad and is registered in Malang, East Java.
Abdullah was still on the run as of Thursday evening. “He escaped and is injured. A local resident shot him using a rifle for hunting wild boars. There is no need for people to panic. They should report to police if they come across anything suspicious,” said Machfud.
The police confiscated several pieces of evidence including a pressure-cooker bomb that was filled with nails and other items as shrapnel. Another homemade explosive was made from a small can of milk filled with black powder and a green fuse. A pack of nails and other objects was attached to the exterior of the can, along with a metal pipe and a 15-cm white cable connected to a switch and a battery.
The police also confiscated three knives, two pairs of scissors, the black powder that was suspected of being the explosive, a switch, a decorative lamp, a computer, parts of a backpack and a book on jihad.
Four explosions
When the explosion occurred on Thursday, local resident Yanto, 46, said he heard the first explosion at 11:30 a.m. The explosion was so powerful that it shook the glass windows of his house, which is located about 10 meters from the explosion.
Yanto and other residents rushed to the house Abdullah had rented from Saprani, the home’s owner. At first, they thought an LPG gas tank had exploded. “But if it was an LPG [explosion], the smoke would be white. There was no smell of gas, only a smell like medicine. So we looked inside the house,” he said.
Inside the house, people found Umar lying on the floor with an injury to his left leg. The residents and Abdullah’s wife took the toddler to Bangil General Hospital.
“Her husband [Abdullah] remained silent. He did not respond to questions from the residents. In fact, he tried to hide the materials in a cardboard box inside his room. Then, there was a second explosion from inside the room. I and other residents ran out of the house,” said Yanto.
Although he was injured, Abdullah tried to flee the house. Yanto blocked him. “I told him to get in the house. He went inside and the ran outside again toward a police car that was near his house. Then, there was the third explosion,” Yanto said.
The police said four explosions occurred during the incident. Abdullah has been on the run since Thursday evening. His wife told the police she knew nothing about his activities. She is still being questioned.
