While enjoying themselves in the post-Idul Fitri bliss, high school graduates and other individuals under 21 years old are urged to decide the best study programs for themselves.
It is hoped that no more college students will suffer from choosing the wrong major. “Make sure that you choose your major in line with your skills and talents and not because of parents’ or friends’ demands,” University Enrollment Test Agency chair Ravik Karsidi said (Kompas, 10/6/2019).
In 2019, prospective college students will take the Joint Entrance Test for State Universities (SBMPTN) after the computer-based exam (UTBK) for the first time. The SBMPTN period will begin on Monday (10/6) at 1 p.m. It will be held for two weeks until June 24.
Prospective college students can choose two groups of majors: science-technology and social sciences-humanities.
On the implementation of the new system, we underline its good intention, namely that prospective students do not choose majors that do not suit their skills and talents. We often hear stories of people choosing the wrong majors and ending up dropping out of college or graduating with mediocre grades. The UTBK aims to help prospective students measure their own skills.
We appreciate the new system of student selection. We can imagine that college students enrolling in the wrong major are often spending extra semesters in college and are at risk of dropping out. When they graduate, they often have mediocre grades.
Based on experience, choosing the wrong major is not uncommon. A lack of information, parents’ suggestions or following friends are among the most common reasons. Being aware of one’s own skills and talents is truly the way to go. Learning things in line with one’s talents and skills will make college study much more comfortable and less of a burden. “This is the field I’m happy to be in” and “this is the field where I can excel” must be the underlying spirit of college study. This can boost students to achieve optimum results.
In this competitive era, the space for those with mediocre skills is becoming increasingly small. We need superior human resources with impressive college grades and on-time graduation.
Surely, there are other factors for success, namely emotional intelligence, work ethos, a learning spirit and teamwork. However, smooth studies at university with good results is important foundational capital. Here lies the importance of choosing the right major in line with one’s skills and talents. With enough time, namely two weeks, prospective students can choose majors that will determine their future.
As difficult and complex challenges lie ahead, highly competent and skilled human resources are required. Choosing the wrong major can only lead to mediocre human resources lacking in any passion.
