41 Drug Kingpins Transferred to Nusakambangan Prison

CILACAP, KOMPAS -- Approximately 41 convicted drug kingpins were transferred from a number of correctional institutions to Nusakambangan prison in Cilacap, Central Java, on Friday (5/6/2020). The transfer of those drug convicts was among efforts to suppress drug trafficking in Indonesia.
"According to data, 10 [convicts] have been sentenced to death and 11 were sentenced to life imprisonment," said Law and Human Rights Ministry correctional institution director general Reynhard Saut Silitonga Poltak at Wijayapura Pier in Cilacap.
Reynhard said out of the 41 inmates transferred, 21 came from Cipinang Prison, seven from Salemba Detention Center, three from the Jakarta Narcotics Prison and four each from Tangerang Prison and Tangerang Juvenile Prison. In addition, one convict came from Cilegon Prison and another from Serang Prison.
These transfers were carried out under strict health protocols.
"Those 41 drug convicts were transferred to Batu and Karanganyar prisons," said Reynhard.
According to Reynhard, this transfer was proof of the commitment of the directorate general of correctional institutions. "This is the first series. Of course, later there will be other policies. With the transfer of those drug convicts, we hope drug trafficking can be reduced in our beloved country," he said.
Reynhard said the transfers were carried out since Thursday night (4/6) at around 11 p.m. completed at dawn on Friday. "These transfers were carried out under strict health protocols," he said.
Nusakambangan Prison coordinator Erwedi Supriyatno said as of 4 June 2020 there were 1,885 inmates in eight prisons on Nusakambangan. The eight prisons apply a multilevel security system, starting from supermaximum, maximum, medium and minimum security levels.
The prisoners were spread in Batu Prison (89 inmates), Besi Prison (382 inmates), Narkotika Prison (419 inmates), Kembangkuning Prison (366 inmates), Permisan Prison (454 inmates), Pasir Putih Prison (70 inmates), Karang Anyar Prison (83 inmates) and Terbuka Prison (22 inmates). Of the 1,885 inmates, there are 209 terrorism convicts and 1,280 drug convicts.

As reported. by kompas.id on 22 Aug. 2019, Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna H. Laoly inaugurated the Karang Anyar Special Prison on Nusakambangan Island. The prison with supermaximum security level is intended for high-risk inmates, such as terrorism ideologist convicts and drug kingpins.
The supermaximum security prison has a capacity of 711 inmates and includes cells for each prisoner. This is part of the optimization and revitalization of correctional institutions. "In here, cell phone service is jammed. People use teleconference facilities during visits," said Yasonna.
