Family units are the smallest social units in the community. Theoretically, without family, there would be no nation. In Indonesia, National Family Day is celebrated on 29 June.
A family consists of individuals who bind to one another. Social units in the community are formed through interaction, mutual trust and complementarity. If one of the chains of the social unit is broken, it could affect the entire social group.
In commemoration of the 25th National Family Day, which was centered in Manado, North Sulawesi, two years ago, the then-coordinating human development and culture minister Puan Maharani reminded that that family units were the first and foremost environment to shape the personality of children.
Implanting the values of religion, humanity, nationality, social justice and morals is mostly done at home. Families are the basis for the development of national character. A healthy family can contribute to the progress of the nation (Kompas. id, 7/8/2018).
The contribution of families to the nation\'s resilience is evidently seen in the pandemic. Therefore, almost all countries in the world provide assistance to families vulnerable to the spread of Covid-19 because if a family gets infected with the disease, it will not only affect the public health, but also the resilience of the nation, especially in the economic field. If the family survives the pandemic, the nation will survive.
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has repeatedly reminded of the importance of suppressing the spread of the new coronavirus. The government has implemented large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) in order to limit the activities of citizens by encouraging them to learn and work from home. The house is the symbol of the family.
On Monday, to coincide with the 27th National Family Day, the President recalled the important role of families in successfully suppressing the spread of Covid-19. In a limited Cabinet meeting on the handling of the pandemic, the President also said bodies of deceased COVID-19 patients should no longer be forcibly taken from hospitals. Such actions could lead to the emergence of new Covid-19 clusters.
A survey conducted by Kompas on Monday (23/3/2020) indicated that public solidarity played an important role in suppressing the spread of Covid-19. Communal power is the key to success as it can turn worries into energy in helping each other in the community.
Admittedly, the Covid-19 pandemic has also undermined the foundation family units. Many families have been shaken and having a hard time coping under the stressful situation. However, many families are dealing with it well and used their fear to strengthen their families and community.
English famous poet William Shakespeare (1564-1616) wrote, "Things done well and with care exempt themselves from fear." Focus on your families and do good things with care. With this, there is no need to fear the pandemic.
