President Jokowi: Discussion on G20 Summit Declaration Needs Flexibility

JAKARTA, KOMPAS – President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo met with leaders of partner nations to express his appreciation for their support of Indonesia's Group of 20 presidency and G20 declaration talks on Monday (14/11/2022).
From 11:30 a.m. President Jokowi held consecutive bilateral talks with United States President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at The Apurva Kempinski Bali hotel. Their support was deemed crucial to the success of Indonesia’s G20 presidency.
“President Joe Biden, thank you for the US support for Indonesia's G20 presidency. I hope for US flexibility in the declaration talks,” said President Jokowi during an online press conference on Monday night.
With Von der Leyen, President Jokowi pushed for collaboration in energy transition, including the European Investment Bank’s investment plan in Indonesia.
During his bilateral meeting with Erdogan, President Jokowi also expressed his appreciation to Turkey for its ongoing contributions to keep the G20 running. “Thank you for your participation in the G20 Summit. To Indonesia, the G20 must result in concrete collaboration,” he said.
Regarding Indonesia-Turkey bilateral relations, President Jokowi pushed for increased cooperation, including opening market access for Indonesian agricultural products and defense collaboration. It is also hoped that the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) will be finalized.

During a bilateral meeting with Albanese, President Jokowi thanked him for his attendance and Australia’s support for Indonesia’s G20 presidency. The President expressed the hope that the success of the G20 was the collective responsibility of all G20 nations. “The summit must produce beneficial documents”, said the President during a press conference.
Regarding Indonesia-Australia bilateral ties, President Jokowi conveyed his appreciation for both countries’ bilateral trade, which reached US$12.64 billion in 2021, an increase of 76.84 percent. To optimize trade cooperation, the implementation of the Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IA-CEPA) must be maximized. With that, economic recovery can be accelerated.
President Jokowi also mentioned concrete collaboration in the Indo-Pacific, including the implementation of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific. “Under Indonesia’s chairmanship, next year, I would like to invite Australia to participate in the Indo-Pacific Infrastructure Forum,” he added.
Meanwhile, Albanese expressed his joy at being in Indonesia once more. He visited the country last June. During that visit, President Jokowi invited Albanese to cycle to the Bogor Botanic Gardens on a bamboo bicycle. “Thank you, it is nice meeting you for the second time”, Albanese said.
