Allegedly assaulted by school principal, body of vocational school student in South Nias to be autopsied

Yaredi was hit by his school principal on the forehead. Yaredi had a headache and died three weeks later.

NIAS SELATAN, KOMPAS — Forensic doctors from the North Sumatra Regional Police will carry out an autopsy on the body of a student at SMK Negeri 1 Siduaori, Yaredi Nduru (17 ), in South Nias Regency. Yaredi allegedly died because he was hit by the school principal with the initials SZ (37) on the forehead. He was beaten as a punishment for marching.

"An autopsy will soon be conducted on Thursday (18/4/2024). We have obtained approval from the victim's family. As of now, there has been no suspect identified in this case," said South Nias Police Public Relations Officer Brigadier Chief Dian Octo Tobing on Wednesday (17/4/2024).

Dian said that they had received a report of alleged mistreatment before Yaredi died. Based on the report, Yaredi was said to have had a headache after being punished by the school principal.

Yaredi initially complained of a headache to his mother who had just returned from the fields. At that time, Yaredi had not yet revealed that he was hit on the forehead by the school principal.

Her mother then gave her a painkiller for her headache. A week went by, but her headache did not improve and instead worsened. Yaredi had to ask for permission to miss school due to her worsening condition. She then developed a high fever on Friday (29/3/2024).

After a high fever, Yaredi confessed to his parents that he had been beaten by his school principal. His mother then asked Yaredi's friends about it, and they also revealed that they had been punished by the principal a week earlier. As his condition worsened, Yaredi was finally taken to Dr. Thomsen Gunung Sitoli Regional Hospital on Tuesday (9/4/2024).

Investigators carried out an in-depth examination to see the connection between the abuse carried out by SZ and Yaredi's death.

Despite receiving treatment in the hospital, Yaredi's condition has not improved. X-ray results and physical examinations by doctors indicate that Yaredi was hit on the head and there is suspected damage to the nervous system.

After receiving the results of the examination, Yaredi's family then reported SZ for the alleged abuse case to the South Nias Police.

After receiving the report, the police went to Dr. Thomsen Hospital. However, due to Yaredi's deteriorating condition, officials were unable to get a statement from him. His health continued to decline until he passed away on Monday after receiving treatment for a week.

The police have also asked SZ for information. Investigators carried out an in-depth examination to see the connection between the abuse carried out by SZ and Yaredi's death. They brought in a forensic doctor from the North Sumatra North Sumatra Regional Police to carry out an autopsy. Yaredi's body was still at Dr Thomsen Hospital as of Wednesday evening.

Yaredi's father, Ama Hasrat Nduru, stated that they strongly suspect Yaredi's death was caused by SZ's assault. They filed a police report so the case can be processed legally. Hasrat hopes that the investigators will enforce the law regarding their child's death.

"The family has also provided information to the police. "We also gave approval for an autopsy to be carried out on Thursday," said Hasrat.

Since being hit by his school principal, said Hasrat, Yaredi had a headache that did not go away until he finally died.
