JAKARTA, KOMPAS — The General Election Commission or KPU will immediately finalize the technical rules surrounding the 2024 Regional Head Election, namely the submission and verification of support for individual candidate pairs. Currently, the KPU is forming an ad hoc regional election organizing committee at every level which in terms of number and composition is the same as the general election.

Since the issuance of KPU Regulation Number 2 of 2024 concerning the Stages and Schedule of the Election of Governor and Deputy Governor, Regent and Deputy Regent, as well as Mayor and Deputy Mayor at the end of January 2024, the KPU has begun the stages of preparing for the regional elections.

KPU member, Idham Holik, said that his party was currently completing the legal drafting of draft regulations regarding the technical submission and verification of support for individual candidate pairs. After the draft was completed, the KPU carried out a public test, consulted with the DPR and the government, and then harmonized the laws and regulations.

"At this time, the KPU is finalizing the draft of the KPU regulation. We hope that the draft KPU regulation will be officially announced soon," he said when contacted from Jakarta on Wednesday (April 17th, 2024).

In the near future, the KPU will also hold two coordination meetings, namely a coordination meeting to evaluate the formation of an ad hoc body and preparations for the formation of an ad hoc body 2024 Regional Election. The ad hoc bodies are the election organizing committee, namely the District Election Committee (PPK), Voting Committee (PPS), Voting Organizing Group (KPPS), and Voter Data Update Officer (Pantarlih).

The formation of an ad hoc body by the KPU will take place from 17 April to 5 May 2024. The number and composition of PPK, PPS and KPPS for the simultaneous regional elections will be the same as for the general election. The formation process and work procedures refer to KPU Regulation No 8/2022.

Currently the KPU is finalizing the draft KPU regulations. We hope that in the near future the draft KPU regulations will be promulgated.

Although the stages of the 2024 regional elections coincide with the hearing of electoral dispute cases, Idham is confident that the entire process will proceed according to the original plan. "God willing, everything will proceed according to the predetermined schedule and various other technical regulations," he said.

Researcher from the Association for Elections and Democracy (Perludem), Fadli Ramadhanil, said that there were a number of problems that needed to be evaluated by the KPU, especially regarding the election organizing committee. The KPU needs to ensure the independence and professionalism of its ad hoc body members considering the many problems with the election count and recap management processes.
