"Unforgotten Supporters" by "Kompas" Passes the 2024 INMA Global Media Awards Final

The success of "Unforgotten Supporters" by "Kompas" (kompas.id) as a finalist in the INMA Global Media Awards is a source of pride.

LONDON, KOMPAS — "Unforgotten Supporters" as a video work providing safety instructions for spectators in stadiums or sports halls, which was initiated by Kompas together with Dentsu, became a finalist for the INMA Award in the "Best Public Relations or Community Service Campaign" category. The passage of "Unforgotten Supporters" is a matter of pride.

"The idea comes from the idea that the Kanjuruhan tragedy should not be repeated. "If safety instruction videos are commonly shown on airplanes or in hotels, why not in stadiums or sports arenas," said Deputy Chief Editor of Kompas Adi Prinantyo, Friday (26/4/2024).

Apart from "Unforgotten Supporters" by Kompas, the other four works that were finalists were works by Helsingin Sanomat (Helsinki, Finland), Jagran New Media (New Delhi , India), Stuff (Gisborne, New Zealand), and The Times of India (New Delhi, India).

At the award ceremony held on Thursday (25/4/2024) evening London time at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, it was announced that the winner of this category was Helsingin Sanomat with their work "Counterstrike of the Free Press".

The evening reception for the INMA Global Media Award is one of the agendas of the 2024 INMA World Congress. The majority of INMA members spread across 94 countries sent delegations to this congress in London. The total number of media companies that are members is 21,866 and Kompas is one of INMA's members from Indonesia.

INMA President Maribel Perez Wadsworth emphasized that one of the agreements reached at the congress is that journalism remains the "North Star" for the news media industry. "Therefore, we must continue to protect the audience's trust in journalistic products, and from there we strive to continue to exist," she said.

"Unforgotten Supporters" is a video with AI (artificial intelligence) characters representing Indonesian football supporters. The video was first shown before the start of the 2026 World Cup qualifying match between Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam at the Gelora Bung Karno Utama Stadium, Jakarta, Thursday (12/10/2023) at 19.00 WIB .

The video contains various illustrations of steps that supporters need to pay attention to and do if an emergency situation occurs while watching a match in the stands. The character, named "Football Supporter", is the result of a collaboration between the daily Kompas (Kompas.id) and Dentsu Creative Indonesia, a digital creative agency.

In the 103 second broadcast, the Football Supporter has the appearance of most Indonesian teenagers who like football. He has brown skin and is wearing a red and white sweater and jeans.

Stadium safety instructions with AI characters that will be played in stadiums before football matches in Indonesia.

Executive Creative Director of Dentsu Creative Indonesia, Defri Dwipaputra, revealed that the presence of the Soccer Supporters character is based on a key issue in sports matches, especially football, which is the lack of comprehensive knowledge among supporters about safety in stadiums.

Not just static instructions, according to Defri, their team also uses AI technology to give physical form and voice to the Football Supporters' character, which is expected to be seen as equal to all individuals who come to the stadium. (Kompas.id, 11/10/2023)

In the stadium safety instruction video, Football Supporters opened by reminding about the importance of knowing the exit doors to anticipate when there is an unsafe situation.

"I am just like any other soccer fan who supports the Indonesia national team. I am aware that friends who usually watch in the stands may not understand safety in emergency situations, so I want to provide preventative measures so that we can spectate safely and return home safely," said the soccer fan.
