Defeating Hong Kong, the Indonesian Uber Cup Team has a chance to reach the quarter-finals

CHENGDU, SATURDAY – The Indonesian Uber Cup team beat Hong Kong, 5-0, in the preliminary round match of Group C. With two opponents remaining, namely Uganda and Japan, the Indonesian women's badminton team has an opportunity to qualify for the quarter-finals.

The victory by sweeping all matches occurred at the Chengdu Hi Tech Zone Sports Center Gymnasium, Chengdu, China, on the first day of the Thomas and Uber Cup Championship, Saturday (27/4/2024) . Indonesia fielded three main strengths in women's singles, namely Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo, and Komang Ayu Cahya Dewi. The women's doubles save the first doubles, Apriyan Rahayu/Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti, and fielded Lanny Tria Mayasari/Ribka Sugiarto and Rachel Alessya Rose/Meilysa Trias Puspitasari.

Lanny/Ribka are in excellent condition after winning in Switzerland, while Rachel/Trias' motivation to deliver their best has been strong during the past two days of practice.

Before the match, the women's doubles coach at the Indonesian badminton national training team, Eng Hian, explained that the selection of the two women's doubles was part of the strategy because of their good performance in the last few tournaments. At a tournament in Europe, March, Lanny/Ribka won the Swiss Open, while Rachel/Meilysa won the Orleans Masters tournament.

"Lanny/Ribka are in prime condition after becoming champions in Switzerland, while Rachel/Trias' motivation to perform their best is strong enough in their training for the past two days," said Eng Hian.

Lanny Tria Mayasari/Ribka Sugiarto competed against Yeung Nga Ting/Yeung Pui Lam (Hong Kong) in a preliminary match of Group C of the Uber Cup at Chengdu Hi Tech Zone Sports Centre Gymnasium, Chengdu, China on Saturday (27/4/2024). Lanny/Ribka won with a score of 10-21, 21-10, 21-17.

The factor is added to the track record of Lanny/Ribka's victory over Hong Kong's top women's doubles, Yeung Nga Ting/Yeung Pui Lam, on the way to becoming champions of the Swiss Open. Yeung's duo was eventually fielded as the first pair against Indonesia in the Group C preliminary round of the Uber Cup, and Lanny/Ribka defeated them again with a score of 10-21, 21-10, 21-17.

Rachel/Meilysa also contributed to the victory for the "Merah Putih" when they appeared in the fourth match. They won against Lui Lok Lok/Ng Wing Yung, 21-16, 20-22, 21-18.

However, there was a note for Rachel/Meilysa in their first appearance at the Uber Cup. They should have won the match in two games when they made match point 20-16 in the second game. However, as Meilysa said, she and Rachel wanted to quickly win the match on that score. As a result, they actually made a lot of mistakes so that their opponents turned ahead by winning six points in a row.

Rachel/Meilysa is part of the Indonesian squad that made its debut at the Thomas and Uber Cup, along with women's singles player Ruzana who was not fielded in the match against Hong Kong. In the men's section, Alwi Farhan immediately had the opportunity to play in his debut when Indonesia faced England in the Group C preliminary round in the evening session.

Indonesia's victory over Hong Kong was opened by Gregoria who defeated Yeung Sum Yee, 21-15, 21-11. The opponent faced by the ninth-ranked Indonesian women's singles player was Hong Kong's second singles player, which made Gregoria somewhat surprised when facing her. Gregoria said she was more prepared to face Hong Kong's first singles player, Lo Sin Yan Happy.

"Grateful, I can finally overcome my opponent. Earlier, I just tried to think one point at a time, not wanting to think too much about other things because I was afraid it would disrupt my game," said Gregoria.

Gregoria is the most experienced player on the Indonesian women's team. Prior to Chengdu, she played in the 2016, 2018, and 2020 Uber Cup. Of the ten matches in the previous three championships, Gregoria won seven and lost three.

The 24-year-old player is the first singles player since the 2020 Uber Cup. With this status, Gregoria always opens the way for her teammates by appearing in the first match.

Ester Nurumi Tri Wardoyo struck a smash while competing against Saloni Samirbhai Mehta (Hong Kong) in the Group C preliminary round of the Uber Cup at Chengdu Hi Tech Zone Sports Centre Gymnasium, Chengdu, China on Saturday (27/4/2024). Ester won with a score of 21-14, 21-12.

The other single players chosen to compete against Hong Kong were Ester and Komang. They also secured two game victories against their respective opponents.

The victory over Hong Kong can be a preparation for Gregoria and her friends to test their abilities when facing the toughest opponents in Group C, namely Japan, on Wednesday. Prior to that, Gregoria and her friends will face Uganda on Monday.

In Saturday's match, Japan also won all games against Uganda. Each game lasted for two sets with a duration of 18 to 22 minutes.

The celebration of Komang Ayu Cahya Dewi after defeating Liang Ka Wing (Hong Kong) in the Group C preliminary round of the Uber Cup at Chengdu Hi Tech Zone Sports Centre Gymnasium, Chengdu, China, on Saturday (27/4/2024). Komang won with a score of 21-16, 21-17.

The Indonesia versus Japan match is almost certainly going to be a battle for the top spot in Group C considering the weaker strength of Uganda compared to Indonesia, Hong Kong and Japan. Uganda, a representative from Africa, only brought four players, so three of them will have to play in two matches.

The top two rankings from each group are entitled to appear in the quarter-finals. A total of 16 men's teams and 16 women's teams competed in the group phase in a round robin format.
