Garut Earthquake: Injured Victims and Damaged Buildings Increase

The number of injured victims and buildings affected by the earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 in Garut Regency continues to increase.

The earthquake occurred in the sea, at a distance of 156 kilometers southwest of Garut Regency, at 11:29 pm local time.

BANDUNG, KOMPAS — The number of injured victims and buildings damaged by the earthquake on Saturday night in Garut West Java continues to increase. It is now recorded that 6 residents were injured and 29 housing units were damaged.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 occurred off the coast at a distance of 156 kilometers southwest of Garut Regency, West Java, on Saturday (27/4/2024) evening.

The Head of Public Relations Section of the Garut Police Department, Inspector Two Susilo Adi, explained on Sunday (April 28, 2024) that the earthquake resulted in six residents suffering injuries. These six residents reside in four districts, namely Cisompet, Cikelet, Singajaya, and Pameungpeuk.

The speaker stated that as many as 29 houses were lightly to moderately damaged and two public facilities were also damaged. One of them is the building of Pameungpeuk Regional General Hospital.

Previously, based on the preliminary data from the West Java Regional Disaster Management Agency, the number of injured victims in Garut District due to the 6.2 magnitude earthquake is 3 people, and the number of damaged buildings is 24 units.

BNPB

Damage to buildings due to the 6.2 magnitude earthquake in southern West Java. The latest report from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) on Sunday (28/4/2024) states that a total of 29 houses were damaged as a result of the earthquake.

"There were no fatalities in this incident. The injured victims were caused by falling debris and may have also fallen while trying to escape during the earthquake," said Susilo.

Susilo stated that the damage caused by the 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Garut Regency has spread to 12 sub-districts. The Garut Regional Police has been collaborating with the local government and the Indonesian National Armed Forces to prepare efforts to handle the victims affected by the earthquake.

The victims were injured because they were hit by building debris and fell while saving themselves during the earthquake.

The priority effort is to set up disaster posts and emergency kitchens in several points that require assistance. The police will also carry out joint patrols in earthquake-affected areas to anticipate the occurrence of looting.

"The local government, together with all related parties, is currently preparing emergency tents and distributing aid such as clothes, blankets, clean water, and basic necessities to affected residents," he added.

Budi Kisrimanto, one of the residents in the Garut Kota District, Garut Regency, revealed that the power of the earthquake was strongly felt. The duration of the earthquake was approximately 20 seconds.

"I and the workers reside in the factory dormitories of PT Garut Makmur Perkasa leather tannery. When the earthquake struck, we left the dorms to save ourselves," said Budi.

The Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center of the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Daryono, explained that the analysis of the earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 was located at coordinates 8.39 degrees South Latitude and 107.11 degrees East Longitude. The earthquake occurred at 23:29 Western Indonesia Time.

He explained that this earthquake is a medium-sized earthquake. This is due to the deformation activity of rocks in the Indo-Australian plate that is subducted below the Eurasian plate in southern West Java.

“The earthquake occurred at a depth of 70 kilometers. "This earthquake does not have the potential to trigger tsunami waves and is a medium earthquake," explained Daryono.

11 regions

Based on data from the West Java Disaster Management Agency and the National Disaster Management Agency, the impact of the damage from the 6.2 magnitude earthquake has reached 11 regions in West Java.

These 11 regions are Tasikmalaya Regency, Tasikmalaya City, Garut Regency, Sukabumi Regency, Ciamis Regency, Bandung Regency, Cimahi City, West Bandung Regency, Sumedang Regency, Pangandaran Regency, and Purwakarta Regency.

The Head of the Data, Information, and Communication Center for Disaster Mitigation at the National Disaster Management Agency, Abdul Muhari, stated that in addition to homes or residential areas, earthquakes also cause damage to public facilities such as places of worship, schools, and healthcare facilities.

"The Regional Disaster Management Agency of districts, cities, and provinces in West Java, supported by a joint team, is currently carrying out emergency response efforts following the earthquake. Meanwhile, the Quick Response team of the Regional Disaster Management Agency in each district, city, and province in West Java continues to conduct data collection and monitoring," said Abdul.
