Largest Telecommunication Equipment Test Center in ASEAN Inaugurated

The government has again reminded that all telecommunications equipment must pass the certification test from the Ministry of Communication and Information.

DEPOK, KOMPAS - The government will soon inaugurate the Indonesia Digital Test House, or the Grand Telecommunication Device Testing Center, which is said to be one of the largest in Southeast Asia. The facility has 16 laboratories that will receive telecommunications devices and equipment, including smartphones, smartwatches, and smart vehicles, to be tested and certified before being circulated in the market.

The Telecommunication Equipment Testing Center (BBPPT) is under the Ministry of Communication and Information. Minister of Communication and Information, Budi Arie Setiadi, Thursday (2/5/2024), in Jakarta, said that BBPPT is an integral part of the digital ecosystem. The obligation to test certification aims to ensure that telecommunications products are safe when used by consumers. Apart from accepting new telecommunications tools and equipment to be tested before distribution, BBPPT can carry out tests on telecommunications tools and equipment that are already circulating on the market.

"If it is found not to meet our certification testing standards, the telecommunications equipment and devices are not suitable for marketing. However, so far from the testing results of telecommunication product samples that we have taken from the market, we have not found any that do not meet the standards," said Budi.

Budi stated that BBPPT owned by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology is currently located in Tapos, Depok City, West Java. The process of building facilities that have 16 laboratories was carried out when Jhonny G Plate was still serving as the Minister of Communication and Information Technology, around March 2021.

The BBPPT land area reaches 22,723 square meters with a building area of ​​12,000 square meters. Budi said that the total budget for the construction of these facilities is around Rp 1 trillion. According to him, some testing facilities in the laboratory are not found in other Southeast Asian countries.

"Not long ago, the construction of BBPPT was completed. It is likely to be inaugurated by President Joko Widodo in the coming weeks. We can say that the facilities owned by BBPPT are among the largest in Southeast Asia," said Budi.

The process of building facilities with 16 laboratories was carried out during Jhonny G Plate's tenure as Minister of Communication and Information Technology, around March 2021.

BBPPT has three strategic roles. The first is to protect consumers from non-compliance with emissions of telecommunications equipment and devices that have the potential to disturb. As an illustration, BBPPT has a laboratory that is capable of measuring the extent of radiation tolerance limits emitted by smartphones and smartwatches for consumers.

The first role is to serve as the entrance and exit point for the export or import of electronic products, including helping domestic industries enter the global market. The second role is national spectrum management that guarantees interoperability and protection from interference between users of telecommunications devices.

"We are striving to collaborate with similar testing institutions abroad so that the certification testing standards we issue are also recognized internationally," he said.
