Brawl in Bandar Lampung Again Claims Victims, One Student Dies

Brawls between students in Bandar Lampung City have claimed another victim. One student died.

BANDAR LAMPUNG, KOMPAS — Rizky AS Al Qolili (16), a student, died allegedly as a result of being involved in a brawl in Bandar Lampung City, Lampung, Saturday (4/5/2024). Until now, the police are still pursuing the perpetrators and investigating the motive for the abuse that killed the victim.

Head of Public Relations of the Lampung Regional Police Lampung Senior Commissioner Umi Fadillah Astutik said the incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning. At that time, two groups of teenagers met on Jalan Ikan Mas, Kangkung Village, Teluk Betung Selatan District, Bandar Lampung City, at around 02.30 WIB. The two groups of students then got involved in a commotion and attacked each other, killing Rizky.

On Saturday morning, the victim's body was taken to the hospital for examination. Currently, the victim's body has been handed over to the family for burial. However, no family member has been willing to provide a statement.

"At the moment, we are conducting an investigation into the incident. The team from Polsek Teluk Betung Selatan, Polresta Bandar Lampung, supported by Jatanaras Polda Lampung, is still working to find evidence and additional information to uncover the identities of the perpetrators," said Umi when asked for confirmation on Saturday afternoon.

The police have visited the scene of the incident and seized evidence including a machete. The sharp weapon was found lying at the location. The police are investigating whether the machete was used by the perpetrators to attack and harm the victim.

Samsul (60), a resident of Kangkung Sub-district who witnessed the incident, said that he had seen several teenagers riding a motorcycle together while carrying stones and wood around 2:00 AM.

Not long after that, he heard a commotion from behind the warehouse of a private company in Kangkung Village. Not far from there, a student covered in blood was found lying on the side of the road. Residents immediately reported it to the police.

Head of Criminal Investigation at the Bandar Lampung Police, Commissioner Dennis Arya Putra, revealed that the victim is suspected to have died from a sharp weapon wound. Apart from that, injuries were also found due to blows from blunt objects and bruises on his face and all over his body.

Based on preliminary investigation, the two groups of students involved in the brawl come from two private high schools in Bandar Lampung. They are suspected to have challenged each other on social media before eventually meeting at the location to engage in the brawl.

We are currently investigating this incident. The team from the South Teluk Betung Police Station, Bandar Lampung Regional Police, with the support of Jatanaras Polda Lampung, is still working to find evidence and additional information to uncover the identity of the perpetrators.

Regarding this matter, Heni Siswanto, a law and criminology lecturer from Lampung University, expressed great concern about the event. She stated that currently children tend to lose their sense of ethics, empathy, and morals towards each other. This condition often leads to fatal acts of delinquency committed by teenagers.

The recent increase in brawls happening in Lampung is viewed as a way for teenagers to demonstrate their existence. They want to be perceived as tough, brave, and able to endure among their peers.

The suspect involved in the student brawl that was successfully apprehended by police officers at the Curug Police Station in Tangerang district on Tuesday (23/10/2018). Various types of sharp weapons were confiscated from the brawlers triggered by a futsal tournament between schools.

According to him, prevention efforts need to involve all parties, including the police and local government. He urged the police to increase patrols to prevent juvenile delinquency. Local governments, starting from the village level, also have a role to play in preventing brawls in their communities.
