Investigating the case of a brawl that ended in death in Bandar Lampung, 14 students were asked for information

Brawls in Bandar Lampung City, Lampung, claimed another victim. One student died.

BANDAR LAMPUNG, KOMPAS — A total of 14 students suspected of being involved brawls in Bandar Lampung were taken into custody at the Teluk Betung Selatan Sector Police office. Currently, dozens of teenagers aged 15-17 years are still being questioned regarding the deadly brawl incident that killed a student.

A brawl between students occurred on Jalan Ikan Mas, Kangkung Village, Teluk Betung Selatan District, Bandar Lampung City, Saturday (4/5/2024) at around 02.30 WIB. From the results of the investigation, the two groups came from two private high schools in Bandar Lampung.

Initially, they challenged each other on social media, then agreed to meet at the location for a fight. A student named Rizky AS Al Qolili (16) was killed after being involved in the brawl. Another student was reported injured.

Head of the Teluk Betung Selatan Police Chief, Commissioner Enrico Donald Sidauruk, stated that the police have not yet designated any suspects in the case. "Currently, we are still gathering information and investigating the roles they played in the incident," said Enrico in Bandar Lampung, Sunday (5/5/2024).

He explained that the police have conducted a crime scene investigation and confiscated three sharp weapons as evidence. The police are still investigating the owner of the sharp weapons.

Head of Public Relations of the Lampung Regional Police, Senior Commissioner Umi Fadillah Astutik, said that currently a joint team from the Teluk Betung Selatan Police, Bandar Lampung Police, and the Lampung Regional Police are still working to collect evidence and information from a number of witnesses. The police will also work as quickly as possible to uncover the perpetrators of the abuse against Rizky.

The case of brawls in Bandar Lampung has been in the spotlight for the past year. Three students have already been killed in these brawls.

Based on Kompas's records, on October 30 2023, a brawl that occurred in Bandar Lampung killed a student named Gilang Ihsan Zikri (18), a student at Bina Latih Karya Vocational School, Bandar Lampung. Gilang was found dead with several wounds from a sharp weapon. The police named five students aged 15-18 years as suspects in the case.

Head of Teluk Betung Selatan Police Chief Commissioner Adit Priyanto showed evidence in the form of a sarong and iron rod used by teenagers in Bandar Lampung on Saturday (23/3/2024).

Regarding this matter, Heni Siswanto, a law and criminology lecturer from Lampung University, expressed great concern over the incident. She stated that currently, children tend to lose their sense of ethics, empathy, and morality. This situation often leads to fatal delinquency among teenagers.

The recent increase in brawls in Lampung is seen as a way for teenagers to show their existence. They want to be considered tough, brave, and able to withstand their friends' pressure.

According to him, prevention efforts need to involve all parties, including the police and local government. He urged the police to increase patrols to prevent juvenile delinquency. Local governments, starting from the village level, also have a role to play in preventing brawls in their communities.
