Media Must Spread Kindness, Vice President Encourages Reform of Broadcasting Regulations

The Vice President emphasized that regulatory adjustments are needed so that broadcast media remains relevant to the current situation.

JAKARTA, KOMPAS — Broadcasting is part of public service so its content quality must be maintained and in accordance with prevailing values and norms. Media and all parties involved in the production and management of broadcasting are requested to always ensure elements of goodness and encourage the preservation of unity in their broadcast material.

Broadcast media are also required to adapt to technological developments. "I see the need to update regulations related to broadcasting, especially to include digital broadcasting and social media," said Vice President Ma'ruf Amin when giving a briefing at the 2024 Anugerah Syiar Ramadhan (ASR) event at LPP TVRI Head Office, Central Jakarta, Wednesday (8 /5/2024).

Present at the event were, among others, Deputy Minister of Religion Saiful Rahmat Dasuki, Chairman of the Indonesian Ulama Council KH Anwar Iskandar, Director of TVRi, as well as the Chairs of Regional KPI and Broadcasting Institutions. The event is a result of collaboration between the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI), the Indonesian Ulama Council, and the Ministry of Religion.

The Vice President emphasized that regulatory adjustments are needed to ensure that broadcast media remains relevant to current situations. This is also important to ensure protection for the community. The role of the media is truly crucial, as the broadcasts it conveys can influence the character of individuals, shaping the perceptions and behavior of the community.

Vice-President Ma'ruf Amin provided guidance during the Anugerah Syiar Ramadan (ASR) 2024 event held at the Central Office of LPP TVRI in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.

On this occasion, the Vice President also reminded that efforts to pursue ratings must also be accompanied by improving the quality of broadcast content. "Make sure the content delivered is not only entertaining, but also educational, accountable, upholds applicable norms, and filled with the values ​​of tolerance to maintain national unity and integrity," said Vice President Amin.

Broadcast media is also requested to contribute in increasing the digital literacy of the community. Especially since some people still do not fully understand the rules and digital ethics. This is important in maintaining a sense of security and comfort in digital interaction, as well as preventing legal issues arising from violations of rules related to information and electronic transactions.

The Vice President Amin also appreciates the performance of KPI in guarding the national broadcasting world. He hopes that KPI can build human resources through quality broadcasting.

The Chairman of the Central KPI, Ubaidillah, stated that the ASR program has been implemented since 2012. The awarding of this prize is aimed at appreciating broadcasting programs that are committed to spreading the values of virtue, wisdom, and religious moderation.

The hope is that this appreciation can also trigger other programs to provide quality content to the community. "The awarding of this appreciation is expected to encourage broadcasting institutions to promote positive transformations for the community because, however, we need alternative information that has been confirmed to be true and accountable," said Ubaidillah.

KPI Central member, Aliyah, stated that there has been a surge in the number of broadcast programs involved in ASR 2024. In 2023, the number of broadcast programs participating in this event was 303 programs. Meanwhile, this year, the number of registered broadcast programs is 394 programs.

"There is an increase of 91 programs. All of these broadcast programs come from 80 broadcasting institutions consisting of 22 television and 58 radio stations. Television has submitted 192 broadcast programs, while radio has submitted 202 broadcast programs," said Aliyah.
