BOGOR, KOMPAS – Muslims should be able to lead their communities in peace and tolerance while making efforts to reduce social gaps and achieve justice.
This message was conveyed by Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN) professor Didin Saefuddin Buchori in his Idul Fitri 1439 H sermon at the Astrid Field in the Bogor Botanical Garden, West Java, on Friday (15/6/2018).
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and First Lady Iriana were present among the thousands praying that morning. President Jokowi was accompanied by State Secretary Pratikno, Social Affairs Minister Idrus Marham, Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin, West Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Agung Budi Maryoto and Brawijaya regional military commander Maj. Gen. Besar Harto.
Meanwhile, Vice President Jusuf Kalla joined in the Idul Fitri prayer at Jakarta’s Istiqlal Mosque. He was accompanied by People’s Consultative Assembly speaker Zulkifli Hasan and Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan. Noted cleric Abdullah Gymnastiar provided the sermon at Istiqlal.
Previously, in a recorded Idul Fitri message, President Jokowi said, “May our sanctity after holding our fast strengthen our national bond and contribute to our nationhood in Indonesia.”
In his sermon, Didin said the Quran should be used as a compass in our lives, as it was filled with social, political and economic teachings. Life lessons in the Quran are filled with teachings of peace and justice that make Islam a blessing for the universe.
Didin said on economic teachings the Quran urges to reduce inequality. Economic assets must not be spread only among the wealthiest. Widening gaps will lead to more problems. Business players should not cheat in their activities.
In politics, Didin continued, the Quran strictly urges that power should be used justly and be accessible to everyone, both to our friends and opponents and both to those whom we love and whom we hate. “Allah prohibits us from being unfair to certain people just because we do not like them,” he said.
Therefore, Muslims should use fasting as an opportunity to become more pious, spread good deeds and show kindness upon others. “Islam rejects all forms of violence, both individually and in an organized manner on the basis of ideological hatred. This includes terrorism, let alone one involving women and underage children,” Didin said.
“Open house”
After the Idul Fitri prayer, President Jokowi returned to the Bogor Palace to hold an open house event. Vice President Kalla and his family were the first guests to shake hands with the President and the First Lady. Afterwards, ministers, state officials and ambassadors queued to shake hands with the President and the First Lady. Thousands of ordinary citizens joined the queue, which snaked through the palace’s front yard all the way to its Gate II.
After Friday prayers later in the day, the President headed to Surakarta in Central Java to celebrate Idul Fitri with his family. Apart from distributing packages of staple goods, the President also visited his former office at the Surakarta City Hall on Sunday (17/6/2018). The President was shown the city hall’s new façade, which was still under renovation.
From the Bogor Palace, the Vice President returned to his official residence for another open house event. The next day, he held an open house event at his private residence in Makassar, South Sulawesi. “Thousands of locals went to meet him from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.,” vice presidential spokesperson Husain Abdullah said.
