SINGAPORE, KOMPAS — Kompas daily won gold in the Sports Photography category in the 2019 Asian Media Awards. The daily also won silver in Newspaper Front Page Design and bronze in Newspaper Marketing.
The awards were given out at the 2019 Asian Media Awards ceremony organized by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) in Singapore on Wednesday (8/5/2019). Attending the event were WAN-IFRA chief operating officer Thomas Jacob, WAN-IFRA Asia Pacific Committee chairman Gary Liu, Kompas-Gramedia deputy CEO Jayant Bhargava and Group of Media Kompas-Gramedia CEO Andy Budiman.
WAN-IFRA has more than 18,000 publishing offices, 15,000 websites and 3,000 companies in more than 120 countries all over the world as members.
Other Indonesian news publishers that won awards at the event were Indo Pos (gold in Newspaper Front Page Design), Bisnis Indonesia (silver in Overall Design), Jawa Pos (silver in Sports Photography) and Republika (bronze in Newspaper Front Page Design).
The Kompas sports photo that clinched the gold was an image of the final round of women’s sport climbing at the 2018 Asian Games. The photograph, taken by Hendra A. Setyawan, was published on the front page of Kompas on Aug. 24, 2018.
Hendra took the photograph from the front of the match alongside two foreign photojournalists.
Meanwhile, Kompas’ front page design that won the silver was that of the May 11, 2018, edition. It was an all-black design with two phrases and no photograph. The main headline read “Saatnya Negara Tegas” (“Time for State to be Firm”) and it was followed by a subtitle: “Pisau Bermata Duabagi Polisi” (“Double-edged Knife for Police”). The design referred to a riot and hostage-taking of police officers at the National Police’s Mobile Brigade Penitentiary in Kelapa Dua, Depok, from May 8 to 10 in 2018.
The all-black design had a dual meaning: first to express grief for the incident at the Mobile Bridge headquarters and second to suggest the firmness that is highly needed to resolve terrorism, which is a serious problem the nation is facing.
Meanwhile, the bronze in Newspaper Marketing is for Kompas’ newspaper sales outlets at 70 Transjakarta bus stops.
Kompas began selling newspapers at Transjakarta bus stops in 2011 and innovations were launched in August 2018. The innovations included an offer for customers to not only buy a Kompas newspaper at a special price but also gain one-month free access to kompas.id.
Kompas.id is the digital channel of Kompas daily. Customers can visit the website to read Kompas articles and buy books and souvenirs and enjoy other information in multimedia form. (NWO)
