The statements made by the two presidential and vice presidential candidates, following the announcement of the vote counting results for the 2019 election by the General Elections Commission (KPU) on Tuesday morning were quite encouraging.Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and his running mate Ma\'ruf Amin said that the time had come for Indonesian people to unite in building the nation. With good intention, Jokowi and Amin expressed their desire to maintain friendship and stay in touch with their rival Prabowo Subianto and his running mate Sandiaga Uno.
Prabowo-Sandi also stated that they rejected the KPU\'s election results and decided to challenge them through the Constitutional Court. Prabowo called on all components of society and their supporters to convey their protests and opinion in a peaceful and moral and constitutional manner.
With the statements made by the two pairs of presidential and vice presidential candidates, the Indonesian people should enjoy a cool and peaceful political condition. After the announcement by the KPU, there was no need to have any worries.
Unfortunately, such an expectation could not be fulfilled. If we followed the news throughout Wednesday, we knew that there were street demonstrations that lasted until the evening. In the Petamburan area, Jakarta, the protests turned violent with the burning of several cars.
Mahfud MD, former chief justice of the Constitutional Court, stressed that the incident in Petamburan and other riots were no longer carried out in the context of political contestation. This can be categorized as security disturbances. If the security forces at one point must take firm action, it can be accepted because they have to protect the interests and safety of the people.
We regretted and were really disappointed with riots taking place in Petamburan. However, we entrust the order and security in Jakarta and throughout the country to the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the National Police, which had guaranteed that residents of Jakarta and surrounding areas carry out routine activities on May 22.
We highly appreciated the TNI, which is always available to provide protection to the community whenever the country faces a difficult situation.
We hope that the non-conducive situation can be immediately addressed and the country can return to normal life.
That is very important because in the midst of the hustle and bustle during the elections, in the world, we witness the escalation of the trade war between the United States and China, which also affects Indonesia. It, among others, caused the weakening of the rupiah.
Once again we appreciate the hearts of the political elites to show their commitment as statesmen to ensure and contribute to the immediate recovery of the political condition in the country as the manifestation of their loves for the NKRI.
Let’s listen to the message of our respectful national figure, the six vice president Try Sutrisno, that after the elections the Indonesian nation should immediately consolidate. By joining our hands together we will become strong or if not, we will be weak and fall in a dangerous situation. We hope that our love for the Republic of Indonesia can overcome our narrowness.
