Traditional Markets to Participate in Great Sale
JAKARTA, KOMPAS — The Jakarta Great Sale Festival (FJGS) has been popular since its inception in 1982. The FJGS is a promotional event held annually to celebrate Jakarta’s anniversary on June 22.
Since 2015, the FJGS has been livelier with the involvement of traditional markets managed by city-owned traditional market operator PD Pasar Jaya. This opportunity for of traditional market involvement is hoped to improve the markets’ popularity amid the onslaught of modern shopping centers.
In 2015, only 10 traditional markets participated in the FJGS. This year, 34 markets managed by PD Pasar Jaya will participate in the FJGS, including Jakmart in Central Jakarta, South Jakarta, West Jakarta, East Jakarta and North Jakarta. The 34 traditional markets will join 82 shopping centers, four hotels and dozens of small and medium enterprises under the Jakarta chapter of the National Handicraft Council (Dekranasda).
Jakmart staff member Eko Prasetyo at the West Gate of Tanah Abang’s Blok B market said that the city-owned food business PT Food Station Tjipinang Jaya would participate in the program, through its products such as wheat flour, sugar, rice and cooking oil. “For every Rp 100,000 purchase of Food Station products (US$6.94), customers will get one FJGS sweepstakes coupon,” Eko said on Monday (27/5/2019).
Every year, Food Station actively participates in the FJGS through its major food commodities at affordable prices.
Separately, PD Pasar Jaya president director Arief Nasrudin said that the participation of city-owned food businesses in the annual event was to prevent an inflation hike in Jakarta.
Through the food businesses’ outlets and traditional markets managed by Pasar Jaya, the people can obtain quality staple products at affordable prices.
This year, 18 commodities will be sold at affordable prices, including cooking oil, rice, sugar, wheat flour, frozen beef, frozen chicken, red chili and shallot.
These commodities will be available at Pasar Jaya’s 34 outlets in a cheap bazaar program.
Apart from participating in the FJGS, Arief said that city-owned food businesses would also be present at the Jakarta Fair 2019 from May 22 to June 30.
Other than city-owned food businesses, all city-owned enterprises and work units will be present at the annual event.
Inclusive outreach
Jakarta tourism and culture agency information and development division head Alberto Ali said on Tuesday (28/5) that the FJGS and the Jakarta Fair aimed to increase the number of tourists in Jakarta.
Through both events, people will know where to shop for quality products.
Alberto said the two annual events are targeted at different markets. The FJGS targets the upper-middle class while the Jakarta Fair targets the lower-middle class. The participation of traditional markets in the FJGS will hopefully reach all people.
“Tourists arrivals, both domestic and international, grows during the two events. This will boost the economy,” Alberto said.
“During the FJGS, transactions increase by 30 percent. Several tenants experience a 100 percent increase [in sales]. Apart from our other programs, the FJGS also boosts people’s enthusiasm to shop,” Senayan City shopping center spokesman Leonardo told Kompas by text message on Tuesday. (HLN/BOW/AYU)
