The declaration of Joko Widodo and Ma\'ruf Amin as the elected president and vice president of Indonesia for the 2019-2024 term marks the final duty of the General Elections Commission (KPU) for the 2019 presidential election. It is now time to build the nation together.
JAKARTA, KOMPAS — Joko Widodo-Ma\'ruf Amin is the winner the 2019 presidential election, with the General Elections Commission (KPU) formally declaring them on Sunday (30/6/2019) as the elected president and vice president of Indonesia for the 2019-2024 term. The declaration marks the end of the 2019 elections and the start of a new journey to build the country together.
"Indonesia is a large country. It cannot be built by just one person or two people. I invite Pak Prabowo-Sandi to develop this country together. I am sure they are both patriots who want this country to progress and prosper. I invite the Indonesian people to forget the political differences that have divided us. We are back to being the state of Pancasila," President Jokowi said in his victory speech on Sunday at the KPU in Central Jakarta, following the KPU’s declaration during an open plenary meeting.
Opposition candidates Prabowo Subianto and Sandiaga Uno were represented at the meeting by Habiburokhman, the legal council chairman of the Gerindra Party’s central executive board (DPP).
"We respect the process that was managed well by the KPU during the vote recapitulation stage and at the Constitutional Court. Incidentally, Pak Prabowo is unable to attend, so he appointed us to be present here," said Habiburokhman.
Habiburokhman greeted Jokowi and Amin after receiving a copy of the KPU decree on the elected president and vice president.
Earlier on Friday (28/6), Gerindra deputy secretary-general Andre Rosiade said that aside from disbanding the Adil Makmur Coalition, the Prabowo-Sandi National Winning Body (BPN) had no other duties left to carry out. "Pak Prabowo and Mas Sandi will not come to the KPU. The coalition has no activities left to do, because the Prabowo-Sandi BPN has been dissolved," he said. (Kompas, 30/6/2019).
However, several parties that were formerly part of the Prabowo-Sandi coalition sent their representatives to attend the confirmation ceremony for Jokowi-Amin on behalf of the individual parties, and not the Prabowo-Sandi BPN. These representatives included National Mandate Party (PAN) secretary-general Eddy Soeparno, Democratic Party secretary-general Hinca Panjaitan and Democratic Party deputy general chairman Syarief Hasan. Democratic Party joint election task force commander Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono congratulated Jokowi-Amin on his Twitter account.
Decision
Jokowi and Amin were confirmed as the elected president and vice president during the KPU’s open plenary meeting presided by KPU chairman Arief Budiman. Arief then distributed official copies of the KPU decree on the confirmation to the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), House of Representatives (DPR), Regional Representatives Council (DPD), Constitutional Court (MK), Supreme Court (MA), the State Secretariat as representing the President, Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), Election Organization Ethics Council (DKPP) and the 16 political parties that took part in the 2019 elections.
"Furthermore, according to Article 427 of Law Number 7 of 2017 on the General Elections, the elected candidates will be inaugurated as president and vice president by the MPR," said Arief.
The inauguration ceremony fpr Jokowi as president and Amin as vice president will be held on 20 Oct. 2019.
In his speech, Jokowi expressed his gratitude to the KPU for fulfilling its constitutional duty. He also thanked all citizens who had participated in the election and entrusted Jokowi-Amin with the task of carrying forth Indonesia’s history towards an advanced and dignified country that stands on par with other countries in the world.
Meanwhile, Amin said that with the completion of all stages of the 2019 elections, it was now time to work together to deliver social justice to all Indonesian people.
Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) secretary-general Hasto Kristiyanto said that with the confirmation of the elected president and vice president, the differences between the coalitions that were formed within the framework of the 2019 presidential election were automatically voided. Cooperation was needed in the future to realize the government’s programs, and communication with the former Prabowo-Sandi parties was moving forward in this regard.
"We are communicating with Gerindra, the Democratic Party, PAN [and] PKS, so there are no problems working together in the future. A healthy democracy still requires views and inputs from parties outside the government," he said. (REK/AGE/NTA)
