The National Commission on Human Rights’s (Komnas HAM) findings in its investigation into the May 21-23 riots may be for nothing if they are only used as recommendations.
As reported in this daily newspaper on Oct 23, Komnas HAM found indications that the gunmen who caused the deaths in the riots were professional and trained. However, Komnas HAM emphasized that the perpetrators were not from the police.
The public has the right to know what actually happened.
The efforts of Komnas HAM must be respected. The public has the right to know what actually happened. The riots began with a peaceful demonstration in front of Elections Supervisory Agency building to protest the results of the April elections. The peaceful demonstration turned chaotic on Jl. MH Thamrin, Jakarta.
Komnas HAM\'s findings regarding the May 2019 riots were actually not much different from the recommendations of the joint fact finding team (TGPF) of the 12-14 May 1998. The TGPF’s recommendations in.the May 1998 riots also found that there were organized, trained groups in the struggle of the political elite in May 1998. However, unfortunately the public never got information as to who organized and trained the groups behind the May 1998 riots and the May 2019 riots.
At the elite level, reconciliation can be said to have already happened. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo\'s rival in the April 17 2019 presidential election has been appointed by President Jokowi as minister of defense. A strategic position. However, we still want the darkness of the history of the May 2019 riots to be revealed. The public and the victim\'s families still have the right to know who trained the shooters and who shot the victims. The position of the victims also needs to be clarified, were they protesters or rioter, and who backed up them?
The dark times of history, the kidnapping of activists in 1997, the May 1998 riots, May 2019 riots, and a number of other violent acts became dark records of Indonesian history. The past will always hang on Indonesia\'s democratic journey in the future. Even though the elite has embraced in the name of power, it is the people\'s right to know what is really going on behind the political background violence. The political elite came to power because of the voice of the people, the owner of sovereignty.
There are opportunities and chances for President Jokowi to reveal all of them.
President Jokowi bears the responsibility to uncover the May 2019 political violence. There are opportunities and chances for President Jokowi to reveal all of them. The political power in the hands of President Jokowi with the support of more than 74 percent of the seats in the House of Representatives is the political capital of President Jokowi to complete the nation\'s work, to resolve cases of human rights violations.
President Jokowi can be said to be successful in infrastructure development. If there is a desire from President Jokowi, it is not impossible that political violence will also be able to be revealed.
